Thanksgiving Decor: The Living Room Wall

Thanksigiving_Living room wall 2015Welcome to my series on Thanksgiving decor! I’ll begin by showcasing how I decorated my living room wall. I wanted to do something different from the design I used last year, and decided to create a design that was reminiscent of leaves swirling in the wind-and I nailed it! As seen above, the pattern meanders up and across the wall to create a delicate and elegant design. I also created a heart-shaped pattern directly underneath the mirror, which adds a bit of whimsy to the space. I hope this first post provides some inspiration for your Fall decor, and that you stayed tuned for more fun decorating ideas!

Brick and Stone

Brick and stone combination buildingAs someone who loves architecture, I couldn’t help but notice the striking combination of brick and stone on a nearby building. The majority of the building’s façade is made up of bricks laid horizontally, with those above the windows laid vertically. The top portion features a plain stone band, with a second band of carved stone below it. The reason this works is because the building’s brick isn’t your typical red variety. It’s a softer color variation that allows the stone bands to pair well in the overall design. In addition, the carved stone creates a unique architectural element that gives an elegant twist to an otherwise ordinary building. You can create a similar look by adding a border to any room in your home. Borders are an easy way to add interest to a space without investing a lot of time or money. With a little imagination, you can add a special touch to any space!

Metal-Clad Monolith

Metal-clad monolith_public artOn one of my walks, I discovered a small plaza tucked away between two buildings. Turning a corner, I discovered a large piece of art that was clad in silver. As seen above, it was a series of interconnected blocks in various shapes and sizes. I love the simple, yet unique, look of this piece. Want something similar for your own outdoor space? Start small by buying pieces at your local garden center, installing a uniquely shaped pergola, or creating your own by using stone, wood, or brick. Whether you buy or create your own, you can easily bring beautiful art into your outdoor space!

Abstract Art at Home

Abstract art_universityThe photo on the right is an abstract piece of art at my local university. It’s affixed to a pair of gates leading to the campus’ church. While I’m not sure what this piece is supposed to represent (I believe it was an interpretation of a bird), it’s still nice to see the whimsy in such pieces of art. While most of us can’t afford a custom piece of art, you can certainly use a photo of one in your own space. Feeling creative? Try making your own abstract art at home! You can use any medium: clay, paper, paint, wood, or glass. No matter how you go about it, you can easily bring abstract art into your space!

The Creepy Pond by the Road

Pond with tunnelHappy Halloween! I thought I’d celebrate by sharing this photograph I took of a creepy-looking pond. The pond is mostly choked with foliage and algae, and one end flows into a narrow, dark tunnel. While this photo is not what you would typically think of for Halloween, I think of it as a piece of decor that could be used in a more formal, grownup way. Decorating this time of year doesn’t always have to be orange, black, or involve pumpkins. Using photos of scenery close to home is a unique way to create a Halloween feel in your own home. No matter what type of picture you choose, you can create a spooky atmosphere that’s sure to please!

Using the Hues of a Seascape

Sky, sea, and sand_oceanI’ve often suggested using the various elements of nature when deciding what colors to use in your decorating scheme. A seascape, like the one pictured right, is a great example! Seascapes typically feature a variety of colors, including multiple shades of blue, white, brown, and green. This gives you a myriad of colors to choose from, and combine, to create a cohesive look. Most of us have vacation photos, so why not use them to inspire us? With pictures you already have and a bit of imagination, you can create a beautiful space that brings the colors of nature into your home!

The Sunning Sea Lion

Sea lion at the aquariumAs I made my way through the aquarium, I noticed a sea lion exhibit off to my right. When I went to get a better view, I saw a large sea lion (right) sunning itself. Unlike the sea lions in my previous post, this one was able to have a spot all to himself. This gives me the inspiration to create a cluster of similar sea lion pictures! You could take several pictures and create a collage, put them in a scrapbook, or frame the photos and use them to create a focal point on a wall. So what are you waiting for? With a few photos of your favorite animal, you can create a cluster of themed decor that will liven up your space!

The Puffin Pair

Puffin pair_aquariumWhile having fun at the aquarium, I ran across this cute pair of puffins! Since my friend’s birthday is coming up, this pair gave me the perfect inspiration for possible presents. You can use a photo of animal friends to create a card, use it as the cover for a scrapbook, or simply frame the picture and give it as a gift. There are many types of animals for you to photograph, along with a variety of settings-from zoos and aquariums, to your very own backyard. With a bit of patience, you’ll be able to capture the perfect pairing of animal friends!

Decorating with Underwater Photography: Part 4

Sea Nettle jellyfish_aquariumWelcome to my final post on underwater photography! As seen above, this post focuses on a Sea Nettle jellyfish. Jellyfish are beautiful and elegant, but also deadly, creatures. Most jellyfish exhibits have a simple background without other sea life in the tank. As a result, it’s easier to get a clear shot since they’re the primary focus of the frame. The vibrant blue background of this shot pairs perfectly with the jellyfish. It allows the brownish-green of its umbrella and the white of the tentacles to create the perfect underwater shot! Jellyfish come in many colors and sizes, guaranteeing you’ll find one that’s the perfect fit for your decor. I hope you’ve enjoyed my posts on underwater photography, and that they’ve inspired you to find new ways to decorate your space!

Decorating with Underwater Photography: Part 3

Grunt Sculpin_aquariumIn my third post on underwater photography, I’ll be focusing on a fish called a Grunt Sculpin. It was fascinating walking up to the glass and seeing how this fish moved! It didn’t use its fins in the traditional way, rather it used them to crawl along the rocks lining the bottom of the exhibit. I’ve never seen this fish before, so I wanted to share it with my readers and followers. The myriad of colors would go with any decor, so the sky’s the limit when it comes to where and how to display a similar photo. Additionally, capturing and displaying unusual underwater specimens is a great conversation starter at any party! Whether for your enjoyment or that of your guests, you can give your space an exotic feel with the simple addition of a unique photo.
