One of the coolest thing about my local zoo is that it’s a zoo and aquarium. This allows visitors, including myself, to see a large variety of creatures. While exploring the aquarium section I came across these jellyfish. I love how effortlessly they glide through the water. Jellyfish look so simple and delicate, but can be quite deadly. Aside from the scrapbook project mentioned previously, I think this is the type of photo that would look great blown up and hung on the wall. The black-light used in the tank makes the jellyfish appear purple-ish. This would make a great inspiration for a design theme: purple, white, and black. You could use different colored pillows, blankets, accessories, or paint to decorate your space. You can use your own favorite animal-based photo for your design theme. All you need is an inspiring photo and your imagination!

Mix and Match, New and Old
With a new year comes the urge to update one’s space. The current update? The bathroom! I have these towels displayed in two locations in the bathroom, but this is the only area that had a large, empty wall space above it. Many photos and paintings had been tried, but nothing seemed to match the specific shade of green in the towels. So, I come home one day and wham!, the perfect picture is hanging on the wall! My mom found a picture she bought several years ago and decided to hang it on the wall. The green leaves in the picture were a perfect match to the towels. This proves that you can mix old and new items and have them match. Contemplating adding new decor? Try buying only a few new items and then repurposing when you already have. You’ll be surprised how mixing and matching new and old can create a wonderful and unique look!
Grand Chandeliers
When I saw this chandelier in one of my local libraries I thought, “wow!” I love the detail of the ironwork and all of the bright bulbs. This is the type of photo I’d use in a dining room or some other formal setting. If you have several pictures of chandeliers, frame them and create a motif on your wall. Alternatively, you could use the wide shot (pictured), then zoom in on the various details in the ironwork and frame those, too. Remember, there are many ways to dress up your walls-the key is to use your imagination.
Etched Glass Lighting
When I saw this beautiful etched glass pendant light I thought it was a great way to add sophistication to what would normally be plain glass. As to not overwhelm the space, only every other light contained an etched image. While this look may seem complicated and expensive, it can be far from it if you know where to look. A plain glass light fixture can either be found in your home, or purchased from a local big box or hardware store. Once you have the fixture, you can pick up a glass etching kit at your local craft store (read the back to make sure the kit is heat safe). Now that you’ve got your supplies, it’s time to create! Did you create a look that’s whimsical, classic, fun, or unique? No matter the design, the look should reflect the feel of the space and your personal tastes.
Art Deco: Lighting
Ever wanted to try something classic in your decoration? Try art deco! The key with any classic style is to not go overboard. The location where I photographed this big light fixture is a large, multi-story building. The architects kept it tasteful and low-key by only using these lights in main areas: corridors, stairwells, and hallways. By keeping this style concentrated in only certain areas, it creates a low-key, subtle elegance. Try adding an art deco-style lamp or accessory in your space for an elegant touch. Keep an eye out for my next art deco related post later this week!
Decorate with a Lunchbox
When most people think of lunch boxes, they usually think childhood. Well, lunch boxes can hold more than just your lunch! For example, this metal lunchbox with cats on it (bought several years ago in a bookstore’s stationary section) is kept upright on my desk. What’s in it? I have CD’s, pens, markers, papers; things that would normally clutter my desk. By putting your stuff in a lunchbox, it not only saves space, but can also give you something cute to look at while you’re working. Next time you’re at a bookstore, go into the stationary section and see what they have to offer. You might find that a lunchbox is just what you need to declutter and dress up your desk.
Lamps Are Accent Pieces, Too
Looking to change the look of a room? Try a new lamp! It’s a great way to try out new styles on a budget. Start with the type of style you want-metal, glass, stone, acrylic, clay, etc. You can also decide if you want a plain lamp or one with some sort of design on it. The lamp pictured, which has a dark base and features a glass shade with beads, blends perfectly with my furniture and other accessories. This lamp allowed me to see how an antique vibe would look in my space-and it works! Can’t afford to buy a new lamp? Try using one that’s currently in another room. You’d be surprised how using what you already have in new ways can update a room!
There’s a Hurricane (Lamp) Coming
Personally, I love hurricane lamps! However, it can be hard to find lamps that are both in good condition and reasonably priced. I try to look for hurricane lamps that are unusual in shape in color (like the one pictured). If you’re trying to find one, don’t limit yourself to shopping at antique stores. Try flea markets, crafters’ malls, and local glass blowing studios. Whether the hurricane lamp is new or old doesn’t matter, only that it fits your personality and space. Give it a try-you’d be surprised how this classic type of lamp can fit with any decor!
Mixed Metals Rock
Most people think that you shouldn’t mix various metals together. If done right, it can look awesome! The key? Use mixed metals sparingly. Instead of decorating an entire room in gold and silver, use an object (or a few objects) in a limited space. The Frog Prince I have pictured is a great addition to my bookshelf or dresser. You can even add a small group of mixed metal objects to a location of your choice. Maybe four or five small vases or other objects on a table or shelf. Don’t like silver and gold? Try the same thing with metallics in your favorite colors-you can find them at your local craft or big box store.
Draw Inspiration from Nature
Do you live near a body of water or other type of natural space? If so, draw inspiration from it! Looking at this picture I took overlooking a lake near dusk, I can’t help but be inspired by the colors of nature-browns, blues, white, cream, pinks, etc. They’re all great colors to use this time of year. Have a piece of furniture you’d like to spruce up a bit? Add throw pillows in colors found in nature. It’ll not only add a pop of color, but is also a budget friendly option.
