When I saw this shell sitting on the sand I immediately thought it looked like a pair of wings. I like the contrast of the pale shell against the wet sand. It’s awesome that you can see the sun reflected in the left ‘wing.’ A photo like this would look great as a centerpiece on a wall. This type of photo is not only unique, but the earth tones go with every decor. Have a photo you took of nature? Dig it out and use it to freshen up your space! Remember, no matter what decorating scheme you use, you can always find something new to go with your style!

Beach Flowers
As I was walking on the beach I noticed some color out of the corner of my eye. I turned to investigate and found some beautiful purple flowers. It’s always interesting how flowers can thrive in a beach environment. I love the combination of green and purple-it’s such a lovely combination! In fact, it would make a great design theme. Adding in pops of purple and green, or a similar floral pattern, is a great way to bring the summer vibe into your space. Remember, it doesn’t take a lot or time of money to spruce up your space. Whether you opt for a whole room update or a quick addition to a couch or shelf, you can easily bring a summer vibe into your space!
The Butterfly Bush
I have many varieties of flora in my garden, including many types of bushes. The picture above is a photo of our Butterfly Bush. As the name implies, they attract butterflies when the bush starts to blossom. While our three bushes have pink flowers, these bushes also come in many different colors. They can get very large (no matter how much we cut them back they just keep growing), and are a great way to fill in a gap in your garden. Not to mention their lovely flowers that attract butterflies. Pink and green are a great color scheme, and you can add it to your space easily and economically. You can add pink flowers to a vase, buy throw pillows with a floral pattern, or buy floral fabric and create your own pillow cases. The best colors and patterns come from nature, and you can easily bring those elements into your home!
Inside the Cone
The picture to the right was taken inside the architectural landmark from my previous post. Many people take notice of the outside of buildings, but the inside of a building can be just as interesting. The interior of this cone is a hot shop, so the high ceiling helps funnel heat out of the space (though it’s still very warm in there). I loved being able to see the ‘bones’ of the structure from the inside. It’s a unique perspective that most people never get to see. Looking to add interest to a wall? Try using photos that feature the inside of architectural buildings. You can take these photos in museums, stadiums, government buildings, or even your own building or house. Your photo will not only be a conversation piece, but will give new perspective to some of your favorite buildings.
The Colorful Glass Tubes
When I saw this art piece at the museum, I thought it was really cool! It’s part of an exhibit called “Look! See? The Colors and Letters of Jen Elek and Jeremy Bert.” I love the colorful, fanciful look of this piece. This particular art made me think of candy. I love the colors and fluidity of this piece. Combining colorful pieces into a single area is something anyone can do. You can buy reasonably priced pieces from museum gift shops, or buy pieces at a craft or big box store. They can be any shape or color you prefer. You could also find a picture with colorful shapes (or paint one yourself) and hang it somewhere that will garner lots of attention. No matter what medium you prefer, you can display art that’s colorful, fanciful, and so you!
The Fluffy Fox
As you walk around my local zoo one of the last exhibits you encounter are the Arctic Foxes. They were sleep on this particular visit, but they’re still cute curled up as little fluff balls. This reminds me of those furry throw pillows you can find at big box stores. A classic color for these pillows is white, and they would look great on a couch or loveseat. You can also find these pillows in other colors, like purple, blue, or hot pink. These would be a great pop of color for any room. Once again, we see that inspiration can come from nature-especially if it’s fluffy and cute!
Mix and Match, New and Old
With a new year comes the urge to update one’s space. The current update? The bathroom! I have these towels displayed in two locations in the bathroom, but this is the only area that had a large, empty wall space above it. Many photos and paintings had been tried, but nothing seemed to match the specific shade of green in the towels. So, I come home one day and wham!, the perfect picture is hanging on the wall! My mom found a picture she bought several years ago and decided to hang it on the wall. The green leaves in the picture were a perfect match to the towels. This proves that you can mix old and new items and have them match. Contemplating adding new decor? Try buying only a few new items and then repurposing when you already have. You’ll be surprised how mixing and matching new and old can create a wonderful and unique look!
Frame a Window
As I said in a previous post, I work in a cubicle with no window. Besides creating my own window, another solution is to frame the picture of a window. I took this photo of an ornate window on a clear, sunny day. Not only will I have a new piece of art in my cubicle, but I’ll also have the illusion of a real window. Whether the window you use looks out onto the sea, a mountain, the sky, or somewhere else, you, too can create an awesome view!.
Grand Chandeliers
When I saw this chandelier in one of my local libraries I thought, “wow!” I love the detail of the ironwork and all of the bright bulbs. This is the type of photo I’d use in a dining room or some other formal setting. If you have several pictures of chandeliers, frame them and create a motif on your wall. Alternatively, you could use the wide shot (pictured), then zoom in on the various details in the ironwork and frame those, too. Remember, there are many ways to dress up your walls-the key is to use your imagination.
Etched Glass Lighting
When I saw this beautiful etched glass pendant light I thought it was a great way to add sophistication to what would normally be plain glass. As to not overwhelm the space, only every other light contained an etched image. While this look may seem complicated and expensive, it can be far from it if you know where to look. A plain glass light fixture can either be found in your home, or purchased from a local big box or hardware store. Once you have the fixture, you can pick up a glass etching kit at your local craft store (read the back to make sure the kit is heat safe). Now that you’ve got your supplies, it’s time to create! Did you create a look that’s whimsical, classic, fun, or unique? No matter the design, the look should reflect the feel of the space and your personal tastes.
