A big part of decorating is architectural accents. This can be the type of residence you live in, details within specific rooms, or even pictures of specific buildings. Accompanying this post is an architectural landmark at one of my local museums. I visited this museum about two weeks ago and decided to snap this picture. There are some people, including myself, who love architecture. I love snapping photos of interesting buildings and their features. If you or someone you know enjoys architecture, it would be a great idea to go out and photograph interesting buildings. You could frame them and create a point of interest on a wall consisting of five or six photos. You could also choose a favorite and blow it up as a stand alone piece. So remember, no matter how bland you space is, it can be elevated by use of architectural elements.

Cheer Up with Yellow Flowers
On the right you’ll see some beautiful yellow flowers from my garden. I love the cheery color! While flowers are expected in spring, these would be a great addition to your desk in the winter as well. The yellow color can boost your mood if you’re having a rough day. If nothing else, who doesn’t like to look a fresh flowers (even if it’s a photo of them)? So remember, it only takes a picture to bring a little bit of sunshine into your day!
The Iris
A few years ago we planted some Iris bulbs in our front garden. Every year they’re one of the first plants to sprout. As you can see from the picture, ours are a lovely yellow and purple color. These colors go together beautifully and are a great example of coordinating spring colors. Want to integrate this into your decor? There are several simple (and economical) ways to accomplish this. You can take a photo of flowers with similar colors in your garden and frame it, add throw pillows or colorful shams, place your plates on colorful chargers, or buy flowers (real or faux) and display them in a glass vase. How will you use spring colors?
The Rhododendron
As I was admiring the front garden I decided to take a picture of our rhododendron. It was supposed to be a bright pink, but the first year it bloomed it was extremely pale in color. However, with every year that passes the flowers tend to get brighter. This was the first time this has happened with a rhododendron we’ve planted, but each plant is different. This type of picture would be a great poster or mural on an accent wall for someone who loves flowers or a cream and pink color scheme. This is also the type of photo I’d frame and put on a desk to remind me of the outdoors (especially if your workplace has few windows).
Looking Up Through the Trees
There’s nothing like looking up at the clouds on a sunny day! I thought this picture, taken looking up through my Vine Maple, was a great shot. You can see the beautiful green leaves against the backdrop of clouds and crisp blue sky. This type of photo would be a great addition to a bedroom or any other space that needs a pop of color. You can display a smaller photo on a shelf, or use a larger poster-size print. Sometimes it’s the simplest images that can give your space the pop of color it needs.
The Lone Wolf
It’s the lone wolf! Specifically, it’s a Red Wolf. These wolves really blend in, and it was hard to spot them in the exhibit. There were several of them, but I liked how this wolf fell asleep while basking in the sun. The colors of the wolf-red, black/grey, and white-are shades that work in nature and at home. These colors would be the perfect addition to your space. They naturally work together, and one can choose a fabric that blends all of the colors together, or items that have each of these colors. As I’ve mentioned before, nature is a great place to get ideas for decorating your space. If you use color schemes found in nature, you’re guaranteed to have an awesome space!
Otter Friends
This is one of my favorite pictures I took at my local zoo and aquarium. It’s so cute! I love how the otters keep close to each other. It was sunny the day I took this photo, and they were sunning themselves while floating on the surface of the water. Just a couple of friends hanging out together (who just happen to be otters). A photo like this would be the perfect image for the front cover of the scrapbook project. It will remind you of a great day spent with friends, and shows that friendships form in all species.
Classic Penguins
Talk about a classic color scheme! Nothing is as classic as black and white. When I spotted this group of penguins, the classic color scheme instantly came to mind. The best part about using this theme? It can be dressed up or down! A photo like this one can be the inspiration for a dressed-down look. Try black and white pillows in a rustic pattern or dress it up with a fancy black and white lamp or side table. Which variety of this classic will you choose? Either way, your space will shine with classic elegance!
African Starfish
As I made my way through the aquarium something caught my eye…a starfish! Not just any starfish, but a red and blue African Starfish! These colors are part of another great decorating theme: nautical. If you can’t re-do your entire space, spruce it up with accessories. Striped pillows with hues of red, blue, and white, nautical flags, pictures of trips to the ocean or aquarium, anchors, and other ocean-themed items. Once again, a simple photo can be the inspiration for an updated space!
Graceful Jellyfish
One of the coolest thing about my local zoo is that it’s a zoo and aquarium. This allows visitors, including myself, to see a large variety of creatures. While exploring the aquarium section I came across these jellyfish. I love how effortlessly they glide through the water. Jellyfish look so simple and delicate, but can be quite deadly. Aside from the scrapbook project mentioned previously, I think this is the type of photo that would look great blown up and hung on the wall. The black-light used in the tank makes the jellyfish appear purple-ish. This would make a great inspiration for a design theme: purple, white, and black. You could use different colored pillows, blankets, accessories, or paint to decorate your space. You can use your own favorite animal-based photo for your design theme. All you need is an inspiring photo and your imagination!
