There’s nothing like a trip to the aquarium! You get to see all the wonders of the ocean like rocky shores, exotic fish, coral, and sea anemones. But wouldn’t it be nice to take that aquarium home with you? The obvious solution is to take pictures from your trip, enlarge them, and put them on your wall. Not only is it a great memory from a fun day out, but it creates a colorful addition to your space. A picture similar to the one on the right would look great in a living room or dining room. You don’t need to go on an expensive, fancy vacation to get a great shot of sea life. An aquarium ticket and a camera are the perfect combination to easily bring the sea into your home.

Simple Christmas Window Decor
When it comes to window decorations, there are so many choices! It’s easy to get in over your head with elaborate displays full of colors and unique ornaments. However, this year I decided to go with a ‘less is more’ theme for my dining room window. As seen above, I used a combination of bulbs and bows. The bulbs were ones I didn’t use on the Christmas tree, and then I used bows that typically go on presents and stuck them to the wall. With only two items I managed to bring both color and interest to my window! A little goes a long way, so no matter how few items you have to work with, you can create something fanciful and unique.
Evergreen Magnolias in Bloom
Although the plant pictured to the right looks like a Rhododendron, it’s actually an Evergreen Magnolia. There are several of these plants bordering a nearby building, and I’ve always liked the large, colorful flowers that bloom every year. These are the perfect type of blooms to put in a vase to adorn a bedroom, living room, or as a centerpiece on a dining table. This time of year provides lots of inspiration for decorating your space! Whether you’re using flowers to decorate your space, or drawing inspiration from the colors of nature, it’s the perfect time to create a space that’s all about Spring!
Chocolate Cake and Flowers
I was sitting at my desk one day with two random items nearby: a chocolate pound cake and a small lilac flower. I thought about how these two items could possibly go together, so I decided to combine them! I laid out the cake, topped it with the flower, and took a photo. I love the look of food mixed with flora! A similar photo could be used to decorate a kitchen, dining room, or breakfast nook. You can take any combination of your favorite food and flora to create a photo that’s both delicious and colorful! Sometimes the best art we own is the kind we make ourselves. No matter what combination you choose, you’ll have an inspiring decor that’s uniquely you!
Local Art Installation: The Stairwell
When most people think of a parking garage they envision nothing but dull concrete. While that’s usually true, there can also be a few surprises for those walking towards their offices. For me, it’s a chance to look at art every day! At the top of the staircase there’s an art installation featuring blue glass in various hues imbedded in concrete. There are other stairwells that feature similar installations in red, yellow, and green. Though a simple design, it nonetheless creates a bit of whimsy for those who frequent the area. Public art can also inspire you to create a similar look at home. You could affix various types of glass mirrors to a wall to create a pattern or add colorful film to a window for a touch of color. Public art can provide great inspiration, so keep your eye open for great designs and colorful patterns!
The Grand Pendant Light
Near the skylight in my previous post, there were also several pendant lights. As seen on the right, these grand lights feature ornate metal work and etched glass. The light and it’s multitude of motifs complement the ceiling medallions and pops perfectly against the grayish-black marble walls. Pendant lights are a great way to add interest to any space! They come in a large variety of colors, shapes, and sizes that will add sophistication and elegance to your room. While traditionally used in kitchens, these can also be used in dining rooms, bedrooms, or an entryway. By thinking outside the box, you’ll create a beautiful and unique space that provides interest and additional light. No matter where you decide to hang your pendant lights, you’ll end up with a bright and colorful space that’s all you!
The Wall of Spheres
I saw this wall of different colored spheres at the museum and thought it looked great! While I wouldn’t recommend doing this to an entire wall in your own home, there are ways you can integrate this look into your space. One option is to take a book shelf (or any shelves) and add colorful glass floats as decoration. These can be bought online, at museum gift shops, or stores along your nearest coast. Need a more economical option? You can also use colored glass globes that are available at most craft stores. A second option is to find a wall similar to the one pictured and put a photo of it on your wall. There are even some online companies that will enlarge it to mural-size. Whichever option you choose, you can have a wall that stands out and will give your space a colorful, modern look.
The Colorful Glass Tubes
When I saw this art piece at the museum, I thought it was really cool! It’s part of an exhibit called “Look! See? The Colors and Letters of Jen Elek and Jeremy Bert.” I love the colorful, fanciful look of this piece. This particular art made me think of candy. I love the colors and fluidity of this piece. Combining colorful pieces into a single area is something anyone can do. You can buy reasonably priced pieces from museum gift shops, or buy pieces at a craft or big box store. They can be any shape or color you prefer. You could also find a picture with colorful shapes (or paint one yourself) and hang it somewhere that will garner lots of attention. No matter what medium you prefer, you can display art that’s colorful, fanciful, and so you!
