Elegance without the Electrical Work

Most would agree that nothing brings elegance to a room like a crystal chandelier. However, most would also agree that the expense of purchasing and installing such a grand piece of lighting is out of most people’s reach. So, how can you bring this piece of elegance into your space? Use a picture! Hanging a large photo of your favorite (or a famous) chandelier in a dining, living, or bedroom is a great way to upgrade the style of your space. And the best part? There are so many styles to choose from that you can easily find one that fits your decor. Whether you prefer metal, whimsical, industrial, antique, modern, or a contemporary style, you can easily bring the elegance of a chandelier into your home.

Add Depth to Your Space

When decorating, we often find ourselves limited not by imagination, but by the size of our space. Traditionally, the way people added depth to a space was to add a mirror. However, there are other ways to make your space look bigger. How? Add a large hallway photo! Pictures of long hallways add a unique depth and interest to any space. In addition, they can be customized based on a decorating theme or your favorite colors. On the right is a great example of a photo you could use in a living or dining room. The dark, neutral colors, chandeliers, and expansive hallway bring a touch of elegance in addition to enlarging the space. Remember, there are easy ways to make your space look bigger without spending a lot of money. A few photos and a wall are all it takes to update your space.

Lighting All Four Corners

Four corners chandelierPictured above is a light fixture from the conference room mentioned in a previous post. I love how it extends out in all four directions! Not only is this chandelier unique, but its design is a great way to illuminate all corners of a room. In addition, the light was installed in a way where the lines of the fixture are aligned with the lines of the ceiling-a great design choice!

The silver finish of the fixture gives it a chic, stream-lined look that doesn’t overwhelm the space. The scallop design around the base of each light (above), gives just the right amount of detail. This light proves that a simple design and great lighting are all you need to bring chic elegance into your space!

The Reception Room Chandeliers

Reception Room ChandelierAs I walked around my state capitol building, I came across the grand State Reception Room. This room is rarely used, even in an official capacity, and access to the public is generally prohibited. However, because an entire wall of the room is floor to ceiling windows, I was able to take some great pictures! Specifically, I was able to capture the room’s Tiffany chandeliers. The room features two of these large chandeliers, and their size and elegance is befitting a room of this grandeur.

The chandeliers feature Czechoslovakian glass beads (above), along with intricately crafted metal accents. While most of us don’t have the type of home that features a large reception room, you can always bring a similar feel into any size space. Chandeliers come in a variety of sizes and finishes, guaranteeing you’ll find the perfect fit. From large crystal chandeliers, to smaller ones in bedrooms, or even chandelier lamps found in big box stores, everyone can find the perfect chandelier that will turn any space into something grand.

Decorating with Clocks: Part 3

Clock in marble_rotundaIn my third post in this series, I’ll be revisiting a location from a previous post. Specifically, the picture above showcases a clock that was easily lost in an otherwise large space. Upon closer inspection, it appears to be set into the stone itself. This clock is bronze in color and features roman numerals on its face. A close-up of the face (below) shows detailed metal work that reveals a leaf design.

While we often only pay attention to a clock’s face, the surround can often be a beautiful addition. No matter how plain or ordinary a clock may appear, its elegance can often be elevated by the addition of a unique surround. This clock and its location prove that sometimes, it’s the decor that doesn’t stand out, that can make the biggest impact. No matter the proportions, you can create a cohesive look that will bring a touch of elegance into your space!

A Classic Geometric Floor Pattern

Diamond geometric marble floorI decided to expand on my previous post by profiling another classic geometric floor pattern. As seen above, this post is all about the classic diamond pattern! It’s a simple pattern, that also exudes elegance. The diamond pattern is one that can be done in a myriad of styles, colors, and textures. Many high-end magazines feature flooring and carpets with this same design. Additionally, this is also the perfect pattern to take outdoors as well. Imagine bringing this classic elegance outdoors by using stone pavers in a diamond pattern to add interest to an outdoor space or garden. This pattern has so many possibilities it’s hard to go wrong. No matter what option you choose, you’ll be able to have classically elegant floors, indoors or out!

Red and Gold Ceiling Medallions

Ceiling Medallions_Red and GoldAs tends to happen in life, I was walking through a building I had visited many times before when I decided to look up at the ceiling. What did I see? A large arch featuring red and gold ceiling medallions. The colors are very regal and medallions themselves are a classic piece of architecture, so I thought they’d be the perfect addition to my blog. Not only do the colors pop, but it would be a great addition to any space. There are two types of ways you can get this look. One, you can buy a few ceiling medallions from your local home improvement store, paint them using the desired colors, and affix them to your wall, ceiling, or archway. The second, more practical and economic way, is to use a similar photo. You can take a similar picture at most historic or old government buildings. Once you have the picture, print off several copies, frame them, and hang on your chosen wall in whatever pattern you desire. This will create a great focal point that will draw people into the room. No matter what choice you decide on, you’ll be able to add a touch of classic elegance to any space!

Classic Penguins

Penguin familyTalk about a classic color scheme! Nothing is as classic as black and white. When I spotted this group of penguins, the classic color scheme instantly came to mind. The best part about using this theme? It can be dressed up or down! A photo like this one can be the inspiration for a dressed-down look. Try black and white pillows in a rustic pattern or dress it up with a fancy black and white lamp or side table. Which variety of this classic will you choose? Either way, your space will shine with classic elegance!

Art Deco: Lighting

Art deco light fixtureEver wanted to try something classic in your decoration? Try art deco! The key with any classic style is to not go overboard. The location where I photographed this big light fixture is a large, multi-story building. The architects kept it tasteful and low-key by only using these lights in main areas: corridors, stairwells, and hallways. By keeping this style concentrated in only certain areas, it creates a low-key, subtle elegance. Try adding an art deco-style lamp or accessory in your space for an elegant touch. Keep an eye out for my next art deco related post later this week!
