Decorating with Street Signs: Part 3

30 minute parking signWhile the typical traffic signs are the usual choice for decorating, you can add a interesting twist by incorporating traffic signs. A limited-time parking sign would look great in a kitchen, bathroom, or garage. It’s a great choice for a room that has a lot of foot traffic. In addition, the blue background with white letters provides the perfect pop of color to any wall. There are a myriad of parking signs, so no matter your color scheme, you’ll find a sign that fits perfectly with your space!

Sailing into the Sun

The Adventuress_view aheadDue to the nice weather this weekend, I decided to feature a picture of the same sailing ship from one of my previous posts. It’s on a day like this I can imagine being outside, enjoying the water and the views. The picture on the right perfectly illustrates this. This is the type of photo that would be great in a living or dining room. The neutral colors of the ship go perfectly with any decor, and the scale of the background creates a grandiose feel to the space. No tall sailing ships in your local marina? Any ship, sail or no sail, can still work in your space. As long as you’re able to capture the feel of a summer day on the water, you’ve got the perfect shot.

Sailing on a Lunchtime Adventure

The Adventuress_mast and sailOne sunny day I got word from a coworker that a tall sailing ship was docked at our local marina. The best part? They were offering free tours to the public. I decided it was time for an adventure! I grabbed a buddy and a quick five-minute drive took us to a ship called the Adventuress. It was awesome to be able to board the ship, talk to the crew, take lots of photos, and enjoy the view. The picture on the right shows the towering mast and its lowered sail. Similar photos can be taken by visiting your local marina. Not only will you be able to get out and enjoy the sunshine, but will also have a new addition to decorate your space!

Sea Lions on the Dock

Sea lions in the bayAs I walked down the pier my ears detected a loud barking sound somewhere off in the distance. I instantly recognized it as sea lions! I followed the crowds and walked out onto a pier that was situated over the bay. When I looked down, I saw a large group of sea lions lounging on several docks that were floating on the water’s surface. This area is a major tourist spot, and even at the busiest times one can usually find a spot to watch and take a few photos. This brings up a great tip: check out tourist spots! Often times people tend to avoid touristy areas, but you can actually find great photo ops in those locations. Additionally, the nearby shops sold sea lion stuffed animals which would pair perfectly next to a similar framed photo! With a picture and a small purchase, you can turn a shelf or nightstand into an animal oasis that showcases both your photography and sense of whimsy!

Dressing Up a Chest of Drawers: Part 3

In part 3 of my Chest of Drawers posts, I’ll be using a more whimsical take on decorating. Whether you’re a kid or kid at heart, there’s nothing wrong with adding some cute stuffed animals to your bedroom furniture! You could add a variety of different stuffed animals, or have a specific theme. The two themes I used below are Hello Kitty and teddy bears. I have an abundance of both, so they were the perfect muses for my third post.

There’s nothing wrong with displaying a collection of stuffed animals, dolls, action figures, or figurines on your chest of drawers. Remember, a bit of whimsy is a great way to not only create pops of color, but also add a bit of fun to any space!

Dressing Up a Chest of Drawers: Part 2

Chest of drawers 2_creamFor my second post I’ll be going for a muted, elegant look. Today’s theme will revolved around a cream color scheme. As seen on the right, I used a lamp with a clear base and cream-colored shade, along with cream-colored boxes and one floral print box for a pop of color. As with my previous post, all of the items displayed are ones I already owned. The clear base of the lamp blends in with any decor, and allows the elegant, cream-colored theme to shine. In order to give the space a bit of color, I added a floral patterned box to the pile to create some visual interest. Once again, you can create amazing things when you use what you already own. No matter what type of boxes you use, you can create a chic, elegant look that will dress up any space!

Dressing Up a Chest of Drawers: Part 1

Chest of drawers 1_silverOften times we use the top of our bedroom furniture as a catch-all for various items. Instead of the usual look, I decided to dress it up a bit! In my first of several posts on the topic, I’ll show you multiple ways to accentuate the top of your chest of drawers. Today, I’m showcasing a silver theme. I have my frog prince statue, a lamp with a silver base, and two silver canisters topped with faux flowers for a pop of color. This simple theme gives a touch of shine to an otherwise plain space. Although I used silver, you could use any color or combination of metals. Additionally, the pops of gold and turquoise give some much needed color to what could be a cold look. All the items used were things I already owned, making this look both gorgeous and free. If you have objects in similar tones, group them together to create a cohesive look. Not only will you add a touch of interest to your bedroom furniture, but you’ll also get the chance to display great pieces you already own.
