Add Depth to Your Space

When decorating, we often find ourselves limited not by imagination, but by the size of our space. Traditionally, the way people added depth to a space was to add a mirror. However, there are other ways to make your space look bigger. How? Add a large hallway photo! Pictures of long hallways add a unique depth and interest to any space. In addition, they can be customized based on a decorating theme or your favorite colors. On the right is a great example of a photo you could use in a living or dining room. The dark, neutral colors, chandeliers, and expansive hallway bring a touch of elegance in addition to enlarging the space. Remember, there are easy ways to make your space look bigger without spending a lot of money. A few photos and a wall are all it takes to update your space.

Decorating with Street Signs: Part 5

Pedestrian crossing signNeed a sign for a hallway or stairwell? A pedestrian crossing sign is the perfect addition! It provides a pop of color, and will bring a bit of fun to a normally small, undecorated space. The photo on the right not only has the classic walk sign and arrow, but also grass and flowers, which adds an extra depth to the photo. You can easily find similar signs at any major intersection or street. No matter if you use one sign or many, you can create a whimsical feel for even the smallest of spaces!

The Snowcapped Mountain Backdrop

Snowcapped mountains in distanceLooking in the distance on a warm spring day, I was struck by how much snow was still on the mountains. I like the contrast of the snowcapped peaks on a warm, sunny day-so I decided to snap this photo! The cool shades of blue, pops of white, and earth tones make this picture the perfect trifecta! This is the perfect time of year to snap a similar photo of your very own. Once you snap your picture, all that’s left is to figure out where to display it. Depending on the size you choose, you could put it on a shelf, display it in a living room, or use it to add a bit of color to a hallway. No matter how you decide to display it, you can create a custom piece of art that will look great in any of your spaces!

Picture a Pattern: Part 3

Paisley patterned dressIn my third post I’ll be highlighting another source of inspiration for your home decor: clothing! The picture above is a photo of one of my favorite dresses. It features various types of patterns in yellow, black, white, grey, and brown. These colors go great with a neutral color palette! The pops of yellow are the perfect addition to a bedroom, den, or hallway wall. The colors blend perfectly together and contain hues that everyone has in their home. Inspiration can come from many sources, so keep your eyes open for great ideas that can be as close as your own closet!

The Arched Passageway

Arched hallwayAs I walked down this passageway, I noticed something unique in its architecture: mismatched archways. I love the combination of different arches in this hallway! It’s very unusual, and the addition of the marble walls and crown molding adds an extra special touch. This a great example of architectural elements that you can bring into your home. While many of us can’t afford to have a similar set of arches installed in our home, there are other ways use this look. You can mix square and round tables in a living room, use multiple styles of furniture, or install lighting in various shapes. Often we feel the need to have every detail in our decorating theme matching. However, adding unexpected details is a great way to make a space your own.

Decorating with Clocks: Part 1

Bronze clock_hallwayWhen people think of ways to add something new to their space, they rarely think of clocks. But in this digital age, what better way to stand out than with a genuine old-fashioned clock? There are a myriad of sizes and colors that you can purchase to create a useful and decorative update. With so many options, I’ve decided to focus this post on the clock pictured on the right. It’s a bronze-colored wall clock featuring roman numerals. Its sleek design and classic numbers is a great way to add a bit of interest to your space. While this clock was used in a hallway, you can use this classic design in a main living area or bedroom. Additionally, you can easily personalize a similar clock by painting the roman numerals a different color, or multiple colors, to make them pop. Stay tuned for more ideas on bringing classic pieces into your space!

The Octagon Light

Octagon light_pendantWhen we think of lights we often think of the typical round shape. However, using other shapes can help you create a unique look. An example is the octagonal-shaped pendant light photographed on the right. The light was located in the center of a long hallway. It was the only one of it’s kind, with surrounding lights being plain squares. Adding unusually-shaped light fixtures is a great way to add a bit of style to your space. You can find similar items at big box stores in many different colors and styles. Not confident in your ability to change a light fixture? There are a large variety of plug-and-go lights that can simply be hung from a hook nailed into your ceiling. No matter your skill level, you can find a unique light fixture to adorn your space. Whether you choose an octagon, square, or something wild, you can add a bit of style that will illuminate your space for years to come!
