As I walked along a path I noticed a tree that seemed to be reaching out from the ground towards the sun. As pictured on the right, the tree was fairly large, covered in moss, and part of it illuminated by the sun. Not only do the earth tones go with anything, but it’s just a cool picture! As I’ve said before, nature can be both a focal point in any space and a great inspiration. No matter what you can capture with your camera, you’re sure to find a way to bring the outdoors into any space!

Through the Looking Glass
It’s amazing how different glass can look when illuminated! This is a photo of the base of a hurricane lamp that is lit from behind by a single candle. I love the play of light and shadow, and how the illumination from the candle accentuates the curves, design, and colors of the lamp. A photo like this would be a great conversation piece if displayed in a den or living room. Your guests will marvel at your unique art piece while trying to guess what’s actually pictured. A similar photo can easily be taken using a piece of glass of your choice illuminated by a candle. So what are you waiting for? With a few items and a camera, you can create a great photo to decorate your space!
The Perfect Shell
Anyone that enjoys beach combing knows that one of the challenges is finding a perfect shell for your collection. Often you’ll find half a shell, or one that’s been damaged from its voyage. But, as I was walking on the beach, it appeared: a beautiful shell! It was just sitting there waiting to be picked up. After making sure the shell was vacant (shells with creatures in or on them should be put back into the water), it was picked up and taken with us on the rest of our walk. This shell presents so many opportunities to decorate! You could frame the picture and use it to accentuate a nautical theme, add the shell to your collection, display it as a stand-alone piece, or nestle it among a group of candles for an elegant look. What was the last thing you collected while out enjoying nature? No matter what it was, there are a myriad of ways for you to stylishly add it to your space!
By the way, did anyone notice the rock behind the shell that has “eyes” on it? An even more unique picture!
Old Buildings: Brick
Often times you’ll be driving around and notice an interesting building. Sometimes these buildings are new, old, or abandoned. The one pictured is an abandoned building near one of my local historic districts. The building itself is on the other side of a river, but I was able to get a good shot. I love all types of architecture, and decided this would make an awesome photograph. While you could frame this picture, one could easily make a collection of building photos and create a scrapbook. The book would not only give you something to display on your table, but also allow you to show all your friend your awesome photo skills!
Old Sea Buoys
Recently I was walking along my local waterfront and what did I see? An old rusted buoy! It was obvious the buoy had been beached for a long time, but I still thought it would make a great photo. It would be the perfect addition to any beach/water theme. Later I saw another rusted buoy (second picture), and decided to take another picture. Taking several pictures around a common theme, like buoys, and displaying the photos in your space is a great idea. The photos would be great on a shelf, art nook, or table. Have something you like to photography? If so, take photos at different locations, group them together, and enjoy!
Frame a Window
As I said in a previous post, I work in a cubicle with no window. Besides creating my own window, another solution is to frame the picture of a window. I took this photo of an ornate window on a clear, sunny day. Not only will I have a new piece of art in my cubicle, but I’ll also have the illusion of a real window. Whether the window you use looks out onto the sea, a mountain, the sky, or somewhere else, you, too can create an awesome view!.
Doors as Art: Land
Have you ever gone into an old historic building or church and noticed the artfully decorated doors? Decorative doors are rarely seen today, but are such pieces of art. Like the look but have no place to put such large doors? In order to display one in your home, the best thing to do is take a picture! If it’s a large door (the one pictured is about three stories tall), take pictures of multiple panels. This particular door features a farm scene (each door has a different theme). If you take multiple pictures, you can hang them together in a pattern on your wall. What are you waiting for? Find a decorative door and snap away!
Black and White and Cool All Over
When most people add pictures to their space, they often try to make the colors in the picture match those of their furniture. While it’s nice to have this cohesive design, why not try a black and white picture instead? The muted hues won’t clash with other colors, and it’s a classic look. This black and white picture of the Golden Gate Bridge will be a great addition to the family room. Using pictures or photos of places you’ve been (or would like to be) is a great way to add style to your walls!
