Thanksgiving Decor: The Table

Happy Thanksgiving! In my last post, I’ll be showcasing the dining room table. I decorated the front half of the table with leaves and various types of faux pumpkins and squash. In addition to the centerpiece in my previous post, I also added a bit of whimsy by having a cute little turkey peeking out from behind the vase and angels.

The placemats (below) are both functional and tie together the room’s colors and decor. Another great idea? In front of each placemat, place a folded piece of textured paper and sit it upright. While mine is currently blank, you can use yours to add well-wishes, write your guests’ names, or create a mini piece of art.

Thanksgiving Decor: The Centerpiece

Simple centerpiece_Thanksgiving 2015In my third post I’ll be showing off my beautiful centerpiece. This centerpiece features a crystal vase filled with Fall foliage and three angels in the forefront. I came home to find that my Mom added the three angels while I was at work (the two small ones are from Germany). I loved the beautiful simplicity of the arrangement, so I kept it as is! The colors of the angels, foliage, and tablecloth all blend together perfectly. Except for a handful of flowers, everything else was something we already had. If possible, it’s preferable to decorate with items you own. It’ll give you a chance to be creative with long-lost treasures, and to demonstrate your overall sense of style.

Evergreen Magnolias in Bloom

Evergreen Magnolia_pinkAlthough the plant pictured to the right looks like a Rhododendron, it’s actually an Evergreen Magnolia. There are several of these plants bordering a nearby building, and I’ve always liked the large, colorful flowers that bloom every year. These are the perfect type of blooms to put in a vase to adorn a bedroom, living room, or as a centerpiece on a dining table. This time of year provides lots of inspiration for decorating your space! Whether you’re using flowers to decorate your space, or drawing inspiration from the colors of nature, it’s the perfect time to create a space that’s all about Spring!

Blooms in Winter

Bloom in winter_pink and whiteEvery year there is a group of large bushes that tend to bloom in winter, even when it’s snowing. They have a variety of colors, but this time I decided to snap a photo of a bush that features pink and white flowers. I love flowers that are made up of more than one color! This gives me the perfect inspiration for a decorating theme. Using pops of pink and white against a neutral base is the perfect addition to your space. You could use accessories such as throw pillows, vases, a similar picture framed on a table, or a rug. Additionally, you could accent the pops of white and pink with other pastel colors that are perfect for welcoming spring. Even in winter, nature can provide pops of color and the perfect inspiration to brighten up your space!

Adding Accessories to Your Living Room

While our living room was pretty much put together, it felt like something was missing. Our coffee table seemed a little too bare. The solution? Add an accessory! My Mom came up with the perfect idea: a bowl filled with various objects. She found the items (a bowl, objects of various sizes and textures, and a place mat) on sale and brought them to me to put together. As seen below, it looks absolutely gorgeous on the coffee table! The second picture shows a close up shot of what the bowl holds.

The colors and textures in the bowl complement the rest of the decor throughout the space. In addition, the carved eggs are something we picked up years ago while on vacation. Overall, this addition costs less than $20! If you want to give your space a new look, all you need is a little imagination and some old treasures to transform your space into something chic and glamorous!

The Christmas Table

Christmas table 2014In order to get prepared for Christmas dinner, the first thing you need to do is decorate the table! As pictured above, I have a combination of nutcrackers, a glittery deer, birds, trees, and a ceramic town scene. While many people would only choose one of these elements as a focal point, I decided to use all of them! It gives the table more interest, and creates multiple conversation pieces via all the different decorations. There are an infinite number of ways to decorate your table. You can have one large centerpiece, decorate part of your table, create an ornate tablescape, or keep it simple by using a single, muted color. No matter what you choose, you’re sure to have a beautiful table that will impress and delight your guests!

A Well Lit Table

When people talk about illuminating their tables, they typically only think of candles. However, there are many different items you can use besides candles to create a well lit scene. On my table, I decided to use a ceramic Christmas café that lights up. The illuminated building is shown below.

To give the piece more interest during the day, I also added a bridge and three pine trees (all ceramic). I created a pond using blue scrapbook paper and arranged the trees around its outer banks. As seen below, the illuminated building provides the perfect amount of light for the other pieces.

Interested in a similar look? You can find plain ceramic pieces at most craft stores. You can either leave them unpainted like I did, or paint them how you’d like. Whether you use candles, illuminated ceramics, or a combination of both, you can create a table that’s both festive and unique.

Decorate More than the Center of Your Table

Table decorationWhen you look for inspiration on how to decorate your table, the word “centerpiece” is always mentioned. But what if you won’t have a table full of guests? Decorate the side of the table you won’t be using. Our dining room table will seat six, but there’s only three of us. Instead of using a centerpiece, I decorate the other side of the table. As pictured, I have trees, angel candle holders, trains, garland, a vase with flowers, and miniature shops. It’s a great way to use various types of decorations to liven up a large area of your table. Remember, not limiting yourself to only a centerpiece is bold, creative, and lots of fun-try it out on your table for New Year’s!
