The Mysterious Chimney

Steam plant chimneyRising from behind a line of trees that slopes into the lake is a mysterious chimney. Occasionally there was smoke billowing out of it, but what was it connected to? After some research I found out: a steam plant! As I’ve stated in previous posts, I work in and around many historic buildings. When our buildings were constructed, they featured a state of the art heating technology: steam. To this day, all our buildings are still heated by an onsite steam plant. It’s a very cool piece of history and also a wonder of technology. Do you have a unique piece of history or technology where you work or live? If so, take a photo! Not only is it a great conversation piece to add to your decor, but it’s also a great way to capture a piece of history.

A Christmas Tablescape

Christmas tablescape 2016Happy Christmas Eve! Above is my tablescape for this year’s dining room table. It features a variety of items in different textures. Out of everything on the table, only three items were bought this year; everything else we already owned. I prefer to use things we already own as much as possible not only because it’s more economical, but also the items have more meaning. In addition, the crystal bowl behind the town scene is filled with brightly colored bulbs and bows, which brings together both traditional and modern holiday colors. Wishing you all a festive and fun Christmas Eve!

Decorating with Street Signs: Part 6

Classic stop signIn my final post in this series, I’ll be featuring a stop sign. Of all the signs in my series, this one is the most classic! This sign would go well in any room, and blends well with any decor. The red will provide a pop of color to your space, while the white border creates a framing-effect on the sign. There are several ways to go about displaying a stop sign in your home. You could create a collage featuring multiple signs grouped together either on a wall or framed on a table. Alternatively, you could blow up a photo of a stop sign and make it the focal point on a wall. I hope you’ve enjoyed my series decorating with street signs. Stay tuned for more tips and ideas for decorating your space!

Sunset Over the City

Sunset over city_pink skyThere’s nothing like looking out the window and seeing a beautiful sunset! As seen above, I was able to get a gorgeous shot of the sky as the sun was setting. I love how it was lit up in various shades of pink, the clouds looking like waves. The columned building, along with maple and pine trees gives added depth to this shot. The best part? If you look towards the bottom of the picture, you’ll notice the twinkling of city lights! This is a great time of year to take photos of beautiful sunsets. You can prominently display one on a wall, or create a collection of photos to decorate several areas in your space. No matter what you choose, you can bring a beautiful Spring sky into your home!

The Snowcapped Mountain Backdrop

Snowcapped mountains in distanceLooking in the distance on a warm spring day, I was struck by how much snow was still on the mountains. I like the contrast of the snowcapped peaks on a warm, sunny day-so I decided to snap this photo! The cool shades of blue, pops of white, and earth tones make this picture the perfect trifecta! This is the perfect time of year to snap a similar photo of your very own. Once you snap your picture, all that’s left is to figure out where to display it. Depending on the size you choose, you could put it on a shelf, display it in a living room, or use it to add a bit of color to a hallway. No matter how you decide to display it, you can create a custom piece of art that will look great in any of your spaces!

The Creek that Never Was

Trees with faux creekStaring out the window you can’t help but notice the mature trees and what looks like a small, dried up creek. It reality, this meandering indentation is a trench for an underground pipe. After installation, the trench was never filled in. As a result, I’m left with a beautiful picture of a faux creek meandering through trees! A similar picture is a great way to bring the outdoors into any room. As I’ve said in previous posts, optical illusions can provide great photographs and fun stories. No matter where you are, you’re sure to find an optical illusion that will be the perfect addition to your space!

Water Beyond the Branches

Bay through the treesDuring this time of year we often ignore the trees that have lost their leaves. However, if you take the time to examine them, you’ll be surprised at what you can find. You can often see nests or, as seen above, a water view. The majority of the year, all I can see are leaves as I look out my office window. However, while I lost a bit of greenery, I’ve gained a (temporary) water view! Nature, like decorating, can bring unexpected surprises throughout the seasons. By looking at your space in a new perspective, you can easily find treasures that are right in front of you.

The Glowing Clouds Beyond the Trees

Setting sun beyond treesOne evening, my Mom called me over to the window to view the glowing clouds during a sunset. I love the various shades of orange, red, purple, and blue! The trees appear to frame the photo, creating a unique shot. If you have a favorite time of day when you think the sky looks its best, take a photo and display it prominently in your home. This will not only allow you to show off your photography skills, but you’ll also have a great addition to your wall. Displaying a photo on your wall is a great way to bring new life into an old space. No matter if it’s sunrise, sunset, or high noon, you’ll find the perfect time to photograph the perfect sky!

Snow-Capped Mountain Range

Snow-capped mountain rangeOn a recent walk I happened to look over towards the bay and noticed the snow-capped mountains in the distance. I love the layers of colors in this photo: the blue of the water, green trees, and white mountains. You can bring a similar color trio into your space as well! Try adding blue, green, and white throw pillows to a couch or bed to update the look. The pillows can be plain, or you can go bold with a large geometric pattern. We often want to start fresh for the new year, but a complete overhaul of your decor can be costly. By using a few throw pillows to update your look, you can easily, and affordably, update your space.
