When we think of lights we often think of the typical round shape. However, using other shapes can help you create a unique look. An example is the octagonal-shaped pendant light photographed on the right. The light was located in the center of a long hallway. It was the only one of it’s kind, with surrounding lights being plain squares. Adding unusually-shaped light fixtures is a great way to add a bit of style to your space. You can find similar items at big box stores in many different colors and styles. Not confident in your ability to change a light fixture? There are a large variety of plug-and-go lights that can simply be hung from a hook nailed into your ceiling. No matter your skill level, you can find a unique light fixture to adorn your space. Whether you choose an octagon, square, or something wild, you can add a bit of style that will illuminate your space for years to come!

Trees in Bloom
About two weeks ago I was taking a walk during lunch, when I looked up and saw something unusual. It appeared that a tree had a blooming flower on it! I wasn’t sure what type of tree it was, so I decided to do some investigating. After doing some research, I found out the tree was a Tulip Poplar. Displaying photos of unusual plants is a great way to add interest and color to your space. You could display several smaller pictures on a wall or bookshelf, or use one large photo as a focal point in the room. Next time you’re enjoying the great outdoors, pay attention to unusual plants that may be hiding in plain sight. If you do, you’ll be able to capture a photo of a unique plant that will give you something new to decorate your space with!
Chocolate Cake and Flowers
I was sitting at my desk one day with two random items nearby: a chocolate pound cake and a small lilac flower. I thought about how these two items could possibly go together, so I decided to combine them! I laid out the cake, topped it with the flower, and took a photo. I love the look of food mixed with flora! A similar photo could be used to decorate a kitchen, dining room, or breakfast nook. You can take any combination of your favorite food and flora to create a photo that’s both delicious and colorful! Sometimes the best art we own is the kind we make ourselves. No matter what combination you choose, you’ll have an inspiring decor that’s uniquely you!
Ornate Bronze Wall Sconces

I was strolling through my local law library when I looked up and saw these beautiful, intricate wall sconces. The sconces were a unique piece of lighting that stood out in the otherwise plain library. When a space features a unique piece of artistry or architecture, a little bit goes a long way. Need to dress up your plain space? Try a unique lamp, oddly shaped mirror, or an ornate piece of furniture. One piece can make a bold statement, so be sure to choose something that not only stands out beautifully, but is also uniquely you!
The Concrete Cannon at the Beach
On my second trip to one of my local beaches I was pleasantly surprised to see that the tide was out. This allowed me to explore more of the beach than I had on a previous trip. After walking a few minutes and enjoying the sunshine something caught my eye. As I approached this oddly shaped piece of concrete I walked around it to see what it was. While I still don’t know what it was, I realized that from a certain angle it looks like a cannon-so I snapped a picture! I think it’s cool when an object looks completely different from what it actually is. If you like this type of look, you can easily get the same sort of photo. First, pick an object that you think looks interesting. Next, try taking pictures of it from various angles and distances until you get a photo you like. You may have to take several shots and use multiple types of items, but you’ll eventually get a similarly unique shot. Once this is accomplished you’ll not only have an interesting photo to display, but also a great conversation piece for all your guests to enjoy!
The Water Through the Trees
Once you’ve gone through the forest and come towards the end of the path, you see a peek of water beautifully framed between two trees. What a sight! It makes the creepy trees and mud worth the trek. I love how the brightness of the sun on the water contrasts with the shaded section of forest I took the photo in. This is the type of photo I’d frame and put on a table or desk, or hang on a wall within a grouping of similar nature photos. Want a similar look for your space? Try taking a photo at your favorite locale from a shaded area on a bright day. Not only will you get to enjoy the great outdoors, but you’ll also have a unique photo to showcase your talents!
The Perfect Shell
Anyone that enjoys beach combing knows that one of the challenges is finding a perfect shell for your collection. Often you’ll find half a shell, or one that’s been damaged from its voyage. But, as I was walking on the beach, it appeared: a beautiful shell! It was just sitting there waiting to be picked up. After making sure the shell was vacant (shells with creatures in or on them should be put back into the water), it was picked up and taken with us on the rest of our walk. This shell presents so many opportunities to decorate! You could frame the picture and use it to accentuate a nautical theme, add the shell to your collection, display it as a stand-alone piece, or nestle it among a group of candles for an elegant look. What was the last thing you collected while out enjoying nature? No matter what it was, there are a myriad of ways for you to stylishly add it to your space!
By the way, did anyone notice the rock behind the shell that has “eyes” on it? An even more unique picture!
The Weathered Wood
It’s amazing how your perspective of an object can change depending on where you are in proximity to it. Case in point? The close-up photo I took of a section of driftwood. It looks both intricate and unique, and most people probably couldn’t tell what object was originally photographed. A photo like this would be great to add interest to a den or office. Want the same look? Try using a common object to inspire you to look at something differently. Have a favorite flower, building, machine, or other object? Try photographing it at different distances and angles. You’ll be surprised how unique your photos turn out to be! Remember, no matter if it’s an object or a person, you can always find a new perspective on something familiar.
The Sun Drifting through the Pine
Hello, and welcome to my 100th post! I decided to post a picture of this unique looking pine tree I noticed along a walking path. I was even able to take the picture with the sun shining down through the upper branches. I love finding unique pieces in nature! Not only are they fun to look at, but they’re also free. A photo like this would look great in a den or office. The earth tones go with any decor, and the sun shining down gives an element of warmth to any space. Next time you go to your local park or beach, look for the uniqueness in nature. Once you take a photo of what you find, you can bring the outside in and create a feeling of warmth all year long.

Shell Wings
When I saw this shell sitting on the sand I immediately thought it looked like a pair of wings. I like the contrast of the pale shell against the wet sand. It’s awesome that you can see the sun reflected in the left ‘wing.’ A photo like this would look great as a centerpiece on a wall. This type of photo is not only unique, but the earth tones go with every decor. Have a photo you took of nature? Dig it out and use it to freshen up your space! Remember, no matter what decorating scheme you use, you can always find something new to go with your style!
